Top Policies

You must be 18 years old to test in Oregon.

You can be 16/17 and take the test if at least one of the following apply: 

  •  Are enrolled in a GED Option Program
  •  Have parent/guardian permission
  •  Are an emancipated minor
  •  Are married

 

  1. Parent/Guardian should begin by downloading the “Parental/Guardian Consent Form for Oregon GED® Testing for 16-17-year-olds.” This form can be obtained here or from either the Oregon Department of Education’s GED Options website , or the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Committee’s Oregon GED® Program website. 
  2. After completing and signing the consent form, parents should return it to Annie Marges, the Alternative Education Options Specialist, via email at ode.ged-authorization@ode.oregon.gov. 
  3. The Alternative Education Specialist will review and approve the “Parental/Guardian Consent Form for Oregon GED® Testing for 16-17-year-olds” withing 5 business days. 
  4. The Alternative Education Specialist will lift the “Authorized to test” hold and the “Age” alert in the GED Manager portal. 
  5. Once the hold and alert have been lifted, approved students will have the ability to schedule their GED tests.

For those testing on the Online Exam:

  • A parent or guardian must be present at the pre-test check-in to give consent and authorize the underage tester to be recorded during testing. If the parent or guardian is not present, the exam session will be revoked.

You do not need to be a resident to test in Oregon.

Some states allow people who don’t live there to take the GED® test and others don’t. You’ll need to check the residency requirement for the state that you’re interested to test in.

No, Oregon doesn’t require you to prepare for the GED® test in an adult education classroom.

For those testing in-person at a Testing Center:

How to Get a GED® in Oregon

Oregon residents and non-residents take note: this test is available to both categories. You can earn your GED® credential in Oregon if you’re not a high school graduate and not currently enrolled in high school.

You must be 18 years of age to take the test independently. If you’re under 18, you need to be:

  • At least 16 years old.
  • Enrolled in an Oregon Option Program for in-school youth.
  • Exempted by your local school district.
  • Legally emancipated or pursuing the GED® with a parent or guardian’s permission.

Sixteen-year-olds may need a court order, and no one under 16 may take the test.

The GED® in Oregon is available in a computer-based format. You can access it online or at an official GED® test center.

Preparatory classes, while not required, are recommended. These classes will help you prepare for the test and give you more confidence. If you want to take the test online without going to a center, you’ll need to take our GED® Ready test and score in the “green zone” (likely to pass) to qualify for the exam.
