Top Policies

You must be 19 years old to test in Montana. If you are under 19 years old, you may qualify for an age waiver.  Please see additional details in the next question.

You must be at least 16 years of age to take the GED exam, and you cannot be enrolled in high school.

Yes, there is a residency requirement to take the test in Montana.

You must be a resident of Montana to take the GED exam in Montana. You will need to provide proof that you live in Montana with a valid driver’s license or other proof of residency. Contact your state office for information about proof of residency. If testing on a military installation or in a federal correctional institution, you must claim Montana as your state of residency.

Some states allow people who do not live there to take the GED® test and others do not. You will need to check the residency requirement for the state where you are interested in testing. Please be aware that the high school equivalency credential will be issued by the state in which the test was completed, not in Montana.

Montana does not require you to prepare for the GED® test at an adult education program, but it is highly recommended. Please visit Contact WIOA Adult Education Programs (mt.gov) to find a program near you.

 A digital calculator will be displayed onscreen during the exam. Examinees may not bring their own calculator into a Montana test center.

The GED Test Calculator Tutorial is another step-by-step tutorial you can use to teach you how to move and perform basic functions on the calculator. The tutorial calculator does not have a limit so you can practice for as long as you need to get comfortable with it. You can also practice using the formula sheet so you’ll be well prepared for test day.
